A volunteer for the classroom (potentially)
A volunteer coordinator for the classroom (potentially)
Whatever you and your teacher make of it!
It takes a team and the wants and needs of each teacher may vary
Ask your teachers “What is helpful?” “What isn’t helpful?”
If you are:
Organized - collect $, send email reminders, create the sign up geniuses
Creative - plan the learning experience activities, organize special snacks
Have in person/Day time availability - volunteer in the classroom to help implement tasks
Have virtual/Evening availability - do the behind the scenes work that can happen on the computer
About 1 to 2 hours per month
Be the person who helps bridge the gap between teachers and families.
Assist teachers with getting classroom needs fulfilled. (i.e. tissues, project supplies, etc.) Check in with your teacher occasionally to see what is needed.
Coordinate with teacher to create Sign-Up Genius for classroom volunteers when needed.
Assist teachers in getting parent volunteers for field trips.
Co-organize one Staff Appreciation breakfast per year along with other Room Parents in your grade and PTA. Step by step assistance will be provided by the Hospitality committee, you will just need to coordinate to be sure everything is covered.
Coordinating getting teacher gifts (collecting money from those interested in going in on a group gift) for holidays and End of Year.
Make an effort to get to know the other families in the class and create a sense of community among the grade. It will help you next year when everyone gets mixed up again!
Touch base with the other room parents in your class (if there are others) or even the other room parents in your grade. Discuss your strengths/interests/availability to see how you can divide tasks and/or work as a team on various tasks.
Contact your teacher within the first few weeks of school to notify them that you’re the Room or Grade Parent, inquire about classroom needs, and establish a relationship.
Request a list of email addresses from the teacher from those who have given permission (see below).
Send an email to the class “introducing” yourself and letting them know the initial needs of the classroom.
All emails must be sent blind-copy, so email addresses are hidden from all recipients
Copy the teacher on all emails sent, unless it’s a gift/birthday surprise
NO email addresses are to be given out to anyone other than the Room Parent. If a parent requests a specific address, you are welcome to ask that parent if it’s OK to give it out and may do so only upon approval
ONLY emails related to the classroom and school may be sent.
Please send all class messages in both English and Spanish via Google Translate.
